Pre-Match Briefing: Manchester City v Chelsea - part two
NEWS 2 MINUTES
Following on from Friday’s talking points and stats in the lead-up to the big match, club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton have more…
WE HAVE HISTORY
Chelsea have won 16 of the last 26 league matches at Maine Road and the Etihad Stadium, losing only six. City’s victories in four of the last six seasons plus the one in 2004 are the only ones in 18 since the Premier League started in 1992.
There was a remarkable moment in this fixture last season. Many Chelsea fans were upset that Stamford Bridge legend Frank Lampard’s switch to New York City had morphed into a swansong at the Etihad.
Jose Mourinho’s side led through a 71st-minute goal by Andre Schurrle as our former no.8 came on as a sub for the hosts: he received an incredible welcome from the traveling Blues supporters.
The ‘reward’ for a such rapturous acclaim was a typically opportunist Lampard equaliser, but the affection for our leading goalscorer remained undimmed and that small misdemeanour will soon be lost in the sands of time.

That 1-1 was our first away draw with the Citizens since Robert Fleck and Tony Cascarino set up a two goal lead at Maine Road in April 1994, two weeks before the Pensioners faced City’s neighbours United in the FA Cup final. Uwe Rosler and Paul Walsh beat Dmitri Kharine to level the scores, with all the goals coming before half-time.
Our most recent win at the Etihad was in Manuel Pellegrini’s debut season, on 3 February 2014. Pundits were predicting a ‘parked bus’ display by the Blues but instead the Londoners – notably Eden Hazard, Willian and Ramires, attacked and harassed the Citizens with relentless power, Nemanja Matic’s mastery of fellow titan Yaya Toure the game’s key battle.
The game was settled by a single goal just past the half-hour mark. Ramires’s shot was blocked by Vincent Kompany but Branislav Ivanovic followed up to sweep a brilliant left-footed shot past Joe Hart.
